Structured Adult-led interventions

We at FSDC work hard to ensure that all children at the nursery have an experience that is safe and fun. We work holistically to make sure that children are happy, healthy and safe. Activities will be adapted to meet the child’s needs and abilities. we offer a fully inclusive environment to all and this is embedded throughout our FSDC ethos.

Each child learns and develops in their own way, to ensure this remains positive we use “now and next”/ PECS/ picture cards/ Makaton to help children gain confidence and independence. These resources also support behavioural concerns including feelings, emotions and to help them make their own choices.

Box Time

Selection of resources used for a small group, adult-led support to help with turn-taking while strengthening communication and response skills. Box time gives your child a quiet time (3 to 10 minutes, depending on ability) with a member of staff to work together and build on their areas of concern, this is done in a fun and exciting way to encourage your child’s participation. We explain to you what we are focusing on and encourage you to do similar activities at home.

Sensory Circuits

Sensory Circuits are a structured plan to help with participation in a short sensory-motor circuit. This gives your child the ability to engage with the day ahead. Behavioural clues such as fidgeting, poor concentration, excessive physical contact or lethargy can indicate that a child is finding it difficult to connect with the learning process and the environment. We observe and plan when giving your child the time on a sensory circuit. We find out what stimulates and motivates your child and their senses.

Now and Next

“Now and Next” is a term used by many professionals in Early Years. We give your child real-life photos of our equipment and resources and let them pick. This gives your child a sense of independence and builds their confidence to join in with their peers. Within SEND this is also a visual guide so that your child can understand what is happening next and sets their expectations.   Sometimes children with SEND find this difficult at the start so we begin with “real life” object and the main keywords “drink time” and offer e.g. cup= water or milk.

Physical development

Introducing your child to new resources and experiences improves your child’s fine and gross motor skills. This can be through a variety of ways and can change to meet your child’s abilities and likes.
